The rich texture of this vase evokes the surface of cooled volcanic rock, with the craters where the heat has bubbled the material creating a delicate webbing of the surface. Weathered and ancient surfaces appeal to me, because I feel an empathy with the form based on my own experiences of challenge and resilience. The level of heat required to melt rock in a volcano or clay in a kiln is a metaphor for the level of pressure and opposition that it takes to break down a resilient human spirit. The repetition of curved handles with the curve of the top front and back area of the vase create a unique contrast of functional and decorative forms. The warm ochre-brown and cream tones of this vase evokes a nostalgia of eras long gone.
Oven-safe, not food safe. Amador clay, fired at cone10.
