This one-of-a-kind sculptural vase is about new beginnings. Sprouting out of a smashed vase, an upright vase emerges with a trunk-like foundation, as if up-taking energy from the smashed and torn vase it grows out of. The upright vase is functional and can hold water for flowers, or the piece can be displayed as am emotive sculpture. After building the larger vase by carefully coiled Amador clay, I dropped it while still wet, to smash/flatten the form, tore an opening in the side of it, and handbuilt the narrow vase coming out of it. The destroyed vase is glazed with a wet-soil color, while the upright vase has Sienna and Aqua tones, with some figure-like shapes reaching upward. Out of destructive circumstances, we may not be able to salvage what was built in the past, but we can begin again and build a new future.
