Upward Climb

This one-of-a-kind vase depicts a trident of handles at the top, with a long ladder leading to the top. At the base of the ladder, a female figure strains to grasp the first rung of the ladder to begin her climb. This piece is made with Amador clay, glazed with a combination of satin and stoneware glazes to create an undulating surface texture that feels archeological and ancient. This underscores the long climb throughout human history that women have faced, not only in the corporate sector, but also the upward climb to attain a balance in self-care, motherhood, partnership, and work. Some might feel that this struggle is “a relic” with all the gains women have made in the past 100 years, but others could argue that this upward climb will always be something each woman faces on her own, across the span of her personal experiences.

Amador clay, fired at cone10.
