This charcoal drawing of the artist’s youngest son, Langston, with his face lit by his tablet, is indicative of a nearly-universal experience children have in 2022. Electronic tablets not only function as a portal to entertainment but also are an excellent tool for teaching. Some generations might view books as “good” and tablets as “bad,” but the ability to have sight and sound at a touch is a gift for children like Langston who are nonverbal or who have selective mutism. Renaissance artists used candlelight or the sun to light faces for artwork, and more recently we use lightbulbs or filters, so the use of the tablet to light the figure positions this work in the culture of this current decade.
