This charcoal drawing of the artist’s youngest son, Langston is also a universal cultural icon of a child with a large McDonald’s french fry. The look of happiness, mixed with the mischief of getting a treat is captured in the subject’s face. This modern depiction of childhood is titled “The Potato Eater,” after Van Gogh’s title of a bygone era of the kerosene lantern painting, “The Potato Eaters,” which showed a group of people eating what seemed to be boiled potatoes around a table. This piece poses the subject at a table with the widely-preferred fried potato in the McDonald’s brand fry box.
