Title: Asking Permission
Size: 12×12″
Medium: Acrylic on wooden cradleboard
Inspiration: Although my original intent was to create a purely abstract painting with the royal blue, navy, gold ochre and ivory colors, three strong figures emerged that became the title of this piece. In the lower left of the painting, a juvenile bends forward, as if clutching her stomach, and two parent figures lean forward toward her, as if she is asking permission to keep a pregnancy or coming to them for some sort of blessing or approval – or it could be a person in distress asking the two people, one with a gun pointed downward, for permission to live. In any case, I couldn’t ignore these accidental figures. There are other figurative parts of the piece, whether focusing on the dark tones as positive space or the light tones as positive space. It’s an interaction between two subconscious worlds.
This piece is painted on a 12×12″ birch cradleboard with thickly textured paint and sealed with a glistening gloss varnish (as seen in the close-up of the right bottom corner). Painted on all sides and signed on the front and back.
