Sister Harriet

A signed, numbered print of an original sculpture and 3D installation.

The original was created while in college in Jackson, MS and was purchased by Belhaven University for their permanent collection, where it remains to this day. The subject is a woman in the Mississippi Delta who Nkechi met during a trip to document life in that region. The door from her college art studio was updated, so the Studio “C” door was sent to the rubbish pile and Nkechi used that very door for this piece. There is a stretched canvas behind the door, which is painted with the background, and then the elk hide bas-relief sculpture of the face and body is sewn to the canvas and painted, with the addition of human hair weave and sculpted fabric for the body. The hands then are sculpted in relief coming over the door, and a set of stairs from a house in West Jackson that was being renovated were cut down to fit the width of the door & painted. This is truly an “experimental media” piece and won an award for its craftsmanship and was featured in The Artist’s Magazine.
