This piece shows a small child opening and peeking through a locked door, gazing toward an older youth with his arms folded in a “W” across his chest. Mathematical symbols and formulas scatter the walls, depicting his brilliant mind. The small child depicts how other people see him as less capable than he really is. This piece is inspired by every child diagnosed with autism -and any child- who shows amazing capabilities but is overlooked or under-appreciated for the breadth of their potential. Many savants have been diagnosed with ASD or other neurological disorders, but their diagnosis is not the full picture of who they are and what they can do in the world.
As with all art, a variety of interpretations are welcome.
